Ireland’s and Galways leading children’s theatre company Branar Téatar do Pháistí with Denmark’s Teatre Refleksion are excited to bring their magnificent adaption of Oliver Jeffers’ children’s book The Way Back Home to The New Victory Theatre, Broadway New York from the 10th – 26th of March and then on to 6 American venues, this summer from May 4th-11th June. In total there will be 76 performances of the show.

The show had a hugely successful world premiere in The Dublin Theatre Festival, family programme at The Ark in 2014, a sellout run at Ireland’s flagship Baboró International Arts Festival for Children the same year and a sell out national tour of Ireland in 2015. To date the show has been performed almost 200 times in 9 different countries, Ireland, England, Denmark, Norway, Austria, France, Poland, Sweden and two separate tours in Japan. Over 15,000 people have seen the show to date.

The Way Back Home will have its American premiere in The New Victory Theatre, New York’s leading children’s theatre located on Broadway and will play for 3 weeks. This prestigious New York venues host the world’s best theatre for children and Branar are privileged to be able to represent Irish children’s theatre there.

Founded by Artistic Director, Marc Mac Lochlainn, Galway company, Branar Téatar do Pháistí, is Ireland’s leading light in creating theatre for young audiences. The company develops and produces high quality theatre and tours both nationally and internationally.

We are really excited to bring ‘The Way Back Home’ on to America. We are very proud of this show and its success. It is great to be able to present work to children in Galway and in the knowledge that its of World Class standard” – Marc MacLochlainn.

Mac Lochlainn also says “Making ‘The Way Back Home’ was an amazing adventure for us, and together the collaborators Ireland’s Branar Téatar and Denmark’s Teater Refleksion charted new ground and crossed many new bridges.”

In talking about the making process Mac Lochlainn said, “We discovered and breathed life into the wonderful characters that were so expertly created by Oliver Jeffers. It was privilege to make this show and we are delighted that so many children around the world have now seen the fruits of our adventure”

The author of the book Oliver Jeffers said of the Branar show in an interview in the New York Times by Maria Russo on Feb 14, 2017 that “…my work takes shape in many different forms — filmmaking, sculpture, whatever. And the live theater stage never occurred to me until I saw this piece and could see the potential, the inner beauty of what you could do there. It’s a different thing, so different from the book”

The Way Back Home is a theatre adaption of the hugely successful book by the multi award-winning, Oliver Jeffers (Lost and Found, The Incredible Book Eating Boy) and this beautifully unique production and introduction for many young children to their first theatre show, promises to realise Jeffers’ much loved picture book into a beautiful and imaginative story on stage. Combining puppetry, animation, original music and the distinctive and evocative design, The Way Back Home explores the boundless imagination of children.

The story is about a boy who discovers a single-propeller airplane in his closet, and upon doing so he does what any young adventurer would do: he flies into outer space! The story tells of this one boy’s adventure and the quest he must undertake to help a new friend he finds in his extraterrestrial travels.

Both companies’ endeavors are a match made in theatre heaven as they produce theatre of the highest quality which encourages young audiences to explore with an open and curious mind as they experience this performance, which is suitable for children aged 4 and upwards.

To broaden any child’s mind is incredibly important in their development and The Way Back Home is a beautiful piece of theatre that will do this while leaving them awestruck from their experience.

The original production was produced in association with Baboró International Children’s Arts Festival in 2014.

The Arts Council of Ireland and the Danish Arts Council supported the production
